Change is the only constant, and few areas exemplify this more than BBC Nations, one of the largest divisions in the BBC.   With around 5000 staff working for the BBC in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and locally within England, the Nations teams deliver local, regional and national services to millions of people each day on TV, radio and online.

The Business Operation team, led by the Nations Chief Operating Officer (COO), consists of c900 staff, who are embedded within each of the Nation’s Business Operations are responsible for directly running the core operations (craft, scheduling, business support, technology and projects) to support content production across multiple sites.  They also work closely with corporate functions including HR, Finance, Technology and Property to ensure the department achieves its strategic and operational aims.

We are looking for a Business Operations Director who will provide strong strategic and operational leadership and support to the Director, Wales and work with the Nations COO to support managing risk, business continuity, sustainability, inclusion and change programmes across the division.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

The Business Operations Director, Wales has strategic oversight of the day-to-day processes, systems and business disciplines, to ensure best practice, compliance and the most efficient use of resources and money.

As a senior member of both the Wales Executive and the Nations COO Senior Leadership Team, the Business Operations Director will provide inspirational leadership (c200 employees) and actively champion collaboration, creativity and diversity across the BBC.

From strategic oversight to transformational change this is an exceptionally varied and impactful leadership role.

You’ll be responsible for (but not limited to):

  • The operational and business systems infrastructure, being the key contact with the pan-BBC Technology Group and collaboratively delivering efficient and modern ways of working
  • Leading on the use of data to drive business decisions focusing on new tools and processes to optimise efficiency
  • Manage a diverse group of key senior stakeholders adopting a collaborative and results driven approach to these relationships
  • Identify opportunities to maximize the creative and commercial potential of our resources and facilities at BBC Wales and across the wider division
  • Provide strategic advice and support to both the Nation COO and the Director of BBC Wales and their teams as they work towards delivering the priorities of the BBC Group
  • Lead sustainability plans, both the wider change programme to achieve the BBC’s Net Zero targets, whilst driving specific and tangible change in the operational areas of the business
  • Provide professional leadership acting as a role model to their teams and colleagues whilst leading on the vision of creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce

Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience

We’re looking for an…

  • Experienced people leader, ideally from the media or digital sector having managed a significant portfolio of activity within a sizeable and complex organisation
  • Experience of leading organisational transformation as well as risk management
