Corvallis, Oregon, Oregon State University’s Department of Public Safety is seeking a Public Safety Community Outreach and Information Coordinator. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ),12-month, professional faculty position. Under the direction of the AVP for Public Safety and Chief of Police or designee, supports the division’s guiding principles of structured and inclusive decision making; clear and transparent communication; community safety, and respect for all its members. The Public Safety Community Outreach and Information Coordinator assists leadership in designing, developing and implementing strategic communication, outreach and education for the Oregon State University Department of Public Safety.
The work associated with this position helps guide decisions, services and strategies for communication and outreach efforts out to the university regarding public safety. Assists leadership in creating, formatting, coordinating, and implementing public response to sensitive or controversial issues. Assists in creating, developing, and implementing community outreach programs and services to improve and maintain relationships between the department and the community. Position Duties

50% Communications Provides support to AVP of Public Safety in areas of media relations, public relations, and community outreach utilizing a variety of communication and research methods. Functions as a liaison and contact person for the department with community groups, media, and individuals in the community.
Supports the design and development of media advisories, public service announcements, news releases, and other forms of communication and informational material as assigned. May support and maintain website development and content. Researches, evaluates, writes, and edits reports, studies, speeches, memos, correspondence, articles, presentation materials and other documents and materials as required. Ensures compliance with applicable department and university policies and procedures, and Local, State and Federal laws.
45% Outreach and Engagement
Coordinates public outreach, and engaging citizens in public safety programs including programs like Citizens’ Public safety Academy, and other community crime prevention and public safety advisory meetings. Effectively interacts, assists, and responds to phone calls and questions relating to public safety programs, issues and public information requests as directed. Actively supports an inclusive and respectful work environment.
Monitors a variety of news outlets and sources and provides content to internal customers as directed. Gauges and monitors public and media attitudes, reactions, concerns, and issues related to department responsiveness. Measures the effectiveness of department communications and outreach programs.
Conducts and coordinates tours of the public safety Department. Coordinates and participates in various community events. Attends meetings and activities outside normal business hours including evenings and weekends and holidays. Prepares and presents information on a variety of public safety Department related topics in a clear, concise, and informative matter; makes effective presentations at public meetings or forums that may include public and private organizations, university staff and the media.
5% Other Duties as Assigned Performs other relevant duties as assigned, including administrative, meeting attendance, and committee participation.

Minimum/Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or related field;
Three years of experience working in public relations, marketing, communication, education, citizen involvement, or journalism, including strategic communication, marketing initiatives, and outreach implementation, or the equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, and experience in these areas cumulatively to successfully perform the job.
One year or more experience writing, editing and/or managing content for digital and print materials demonstrating attention to detail and proof reading skills.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Excellent customer and personal service, including conducting customer needs assessments, meeting quality standards for customer service, and evaluating customer satisfaction.
Evidence of successful collaboration with multiple stakeholders when developing communications.
Demonstrated commitment and experience in promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Master’s degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, or related field.
Experience coordinating and operating a public relations and information program to include community involvement, outreach & engagement, and media requirements as they relate to law enforcement.
Experience in a related field with a municipal police or sheriff’s department.
Project management and analytical skills.
Understanding of media production, communication, and other dissemination methods, to include creating alternate means of informing and engaging stakeholders via written, oral, and visual media.
Experience producing digital multimedia content with video and/or graphic design tools included in Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent, such as Final Cut Pro.
Demonstrated experience with problem solving and conflict resolution, including the ability to work with angry, frustrated, or discourteous people.
Experience dealing with possible exposure to disease or infections, including exposure to minor burns, cuts, bites, or stings.
Willingness to wear specialized protective or safety equipment.
Proficient with email, word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation creation
Ideation (the process of forming ideas from conception to implementation)
Demonstrated ability to come up with unique or unconventional ideas about a given topic or situation, or to develop creative ways to solve a problem

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

This position typically works in an office environment with extended periods working on the computer. The work schedule is flexible with most work occurring M-F with regular attendance to on-campus and off-campus sites as related to the position, including some outdoor and evening events. Some after hours and weekend response is required. There is Moderate amount of lifting due to set-up of equipment and supplies for events. This position has access to confidential information regarding the operations of campus safety and security.
