The role combines enterprise financial planning with the evaluation of new business initiatives, commercial opportunities, and investments that support the organization’s long-term mission and financial sustainability.

The Director will also help modernize finance and administrative processes through automation, reporting improvements, and the responsible use of AI tools. Success requires strong technical capabilities, sound business judgment, and the ability to partner effectively with financial and nonfinancial stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, periodic forecasts, and long-range financial planning across the organization and its related entities.
  • Establish planning calendars, financial assumptions, and consistent methodologies that improve accountability and comparability across departments.
  • Develop integrated financial models that connect operating activity, staffing, revenue, expenses, capital investment, and cash requirements.
  • Analyze financial performance against budgets, forecasts, and prior periods, identifying key drivers, emerging risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Prepare executive reporting packages that clearly explain results, forecast changes, and recommended actions.
  • Evaluate resource allocation decisions to balance strategic priorities, operating requirements, and financial capacity.
  • Partner with accounting leadership to ensure planning and reporting align with financial results and applicable accounting standards.

Strategic Finance & Commercial Initiatives

  • Serve as a financial partner to the CFO and executive leadership in evaluating growth opportunities, new programs, partnerships, and business ventures.
  • Build business cases and financial models for proposed initiatives, including startup costs, operating requirements, revenue assumptions, and anticipated returns.
  • Perform scenario and sensitivity analyses to assess financial feasibility, cash needs, investment risk, and potential outcomes.
  • Develop operating models, valuation analyses, and capitalization scenarios for new entities or early-stage ventures.
  • Assess ownership structures and potential dilution associated with external investment or additional funding.
  • Support the financial aspects of entity formation and capitalization in coordination with leadership, accounting, legal, and external advisors.
  • Establish financial milestones and performance measures to monitor new initiatives after launch.

Operational & Multi-Entity Finance

  • Develop a thorough understanding of the organization’s operating model, funding sources, financial commitments, and strategic priorities.
  • Partner with department and program leaders to evaluate staffing plans, cost structures, capacity needs, and financial performance.
  • Support consolidated financial analysis across nonprofit and commercial activities while recognizing differences in their operating objectives.
  • Evaluate the financial impact of shared services, intercompany activity, and cost allocation methodologies in partnership with accounting.
  • Identify financial trends and operational issues early, providing practical recommendations to leadership.
  • Help stakeholders understand the financial implications of proposed decisions and competing resource needs.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of leadership experience in corporate or managerial finance within a for-profit, nonprofit, or similarly complex organization.
  • Demonstrated success leading budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning across multiple departments or operating entities.
  • Advanced financial modeling skills, including experience evaluating new ventures, early-stage businesses, or significant strategic initiatives.
  • Experience developing operating models, valuation analyses, and capitalization and ownership dilution scenarios.
  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and the consolidation of financial information across related entities.
  • Working proficiency with current AI tools and demonstrated experience using technology to improve financial processes.
  • Ability to interpret complex financial information, identify business implications, and present clear recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in healthcare, life sciences, research, or another mission-driven environment with complex funding and operating structures.
  • Familiarity with organizations that combine nonprofit activities with commercial operations.
  • Experience supporting new business formation, joint ventures, strategic partnerships, or commercialization initiatives.
  • Experience evaluating activities supported by a combination of grants, contracts, service revenue, or other funding sources.
  • Familiarity with financial planning platforms, enterprise systems, business intelligence tools, and automated reporting.
