Sunstates Security has spent decades earning the trust of clients who hand us the safety of their people and property. As we grow and welcome new companies into the Sunstates family, the decisions in front of us get bigger and come faster. Leadership needs to see around corners: what a new contract will really earn, where margin is slipping, and what an acquisition looks like ninety days after close.
Today much of that forward look runs through our CFO. This role changes that. We are building a more formal FP&A function, and we want a leader who will build it with their own hands. If you read a blank page as an invitation, love turning operating assumptions into a clear financial story, and want your work to shape where a growing company goes next, this role was built for you.
GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB
The Director, FP&A is the leader who turns closed results into forward looking insight that leaders actually use. This position builds and runs budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and performance analysis for the company, and leads the financial integration of every company we acquire, from setting the baseline to bringing them onto our planning cadence, reporting, and systems.
Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer and partnering closely with the Finance, Accounting, Technology, and Operations, the Director is both a strategic partner and a hands on builder. Accounting owns the books and the close. FP&A takes those validated results and turns them into the plan, the forecast, and the answer to “what happens if.” Sunstates is a growing, PE backed company actively integrating acquisitions, so everything this leader builds must be simple, repeatable, and ready to scale.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Modeling
- Own and continuously improve the annual budget, including timelines, assumptions, templates, review routines, and consolidation of operating plans.
- Lead quarterly forecasting and reforecasting, and call out risks and opportunities while there is still time to act on them.
- Build and maintain driver based models that connect revenue, labor, and operating expenses to expected financial performance. In a labor driven business, this is where the story lives.
- Build scenario and sensitivity analyses for enterprise planning, labor changes, investments, acquisitions, and other strategic decisions.
- Support cash forecasting and liquidity planning in partnership with the CFO and Accounting.
- Set clear assumptions, owners, review routines, and forecast accuracy measures so planning gets more reliable every cycle.
Performance Analysis & Management Reporting
- Translate closed results into analysis leaders can act on, including budget to actual, forecast to actual, prior period, and year over year performance.
- Build concise executive and Board level analysis that highlights trends, drivers, risks, and opportunities, and what they mean for the months ahead.
- Sharpen profitability visibility across regions, customers, contracts, and service lines, and identify what is truly driving margin.
- Set the KPIs and analytical routines that help leaders spot trends earlier and act sooner.
- Partner with Accounting so every management report rests on accurate, validated numbers, without duplicating Accounting’s ownership of the books, close, financial statements, or controls.
- Deliver recurring and ad hoc analysis for the CFO and executive leadership team.
Finance Integration & Decision Support
- Lead post close finance integration for recent and future acquisitions, establishing financial baselines and bringing acquired companies onto our budgeting and forecasting cadence, management reporting, KPIs, and models so they operate as one Sunstates.
- Support acquisition and integration planning with financial analysis and scenario modeling that names the risks, dependencies, and transition priorities clearly and early.
- Coordinate integration across systems, data, reporting calendars, and Finance processes, working with Accounting, Technology, acquired company leadership, and outside advisors.
- Partner with the Vice President of Finance and Accounting leadership so FP&A and Accounting operate as two halves of one Finance team.
Process, Data & Technology
- Document and transition the forecasting, budgeting, and analytical work currently concentrated with the CFO into sustainable, repeatable processes.
- Partner with Technology and BI to improve the availability, consistency, and usability of financial and operational data.
- Grow Partner with Business Intelligence Analyst to grow our Power BI capabilitiesy and other analytical tools so leaders get visibility without waiting on a manual spreadsheet.
- Simplify, standardize, and automate recurring work before adding manual effort.
- Define the data, reporting, and system requirements a scalable FP&A function needs, and play an active role in Finance system implementations and integration projects.
- Build clear documentation, calendars, and routines for every major FP&A deliverable.
Finance Team Development & Collaboration
- Create real capacity across Finance leadership for strategic analysis, planning, and integration.
- Share models, knowledge, and analytical approaches across Finance and Accounting to raise the capability of the whole team.
- Work with the CFO and Vice President of Finance to define clear ownership and handoffs between Accounting and FP&A.
- Build a Finance organization that scales with Sunstates and never depends on a single person for critical recurring work.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
The Director, FP&A is accountable for how clearly leadership can see the road ahead. Success looks like a budget and forecast that run on a predictable calendar and get more accurate every quarter, acquired companies that plan and report like Sunstates soon after close, margin drivers that are visible by region, customer, and contract, and Board materials that tell a clear and honest story. Most of all, it looks like an executive team that calls FP&A first, and a CFO who no longer carries the forecast alone.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field. MBA, CPA, or other advanced credential preferred.
- 8+ years of progressive finance experience, with meaningful ownership of FP&A, budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and finance integration.
- A track record of building or materially improving planning and forecasting processes in a growing organization.
- Strong financial modeling skills, including driver based forecasting and scenario analysis, and the ability to translate operating assumptions into financial outcomes.
- Experience partnering with senior executives and operational leaders, and presenting complex financial information in a clear, practical way.
- Experience in a PE backed, acquisitive, multisite, or labor intensive service business strongly preferred, along with post close integration or finance transformation experience.
- Advanced Excel and data analysis skills. Experience with Power BI or a similar business intelligence tool preferred.
- Ability to work across Finance, Accounting, Operations, and Technology while keeping ownership and accountability clear.
- Strong communication and judgment, with the range to move between strategy and hands on execution in the same day.
- Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and build repeatable processes in a growing, evolving organization.
OUR VALUES, IN THIS ROLE
Honesty means you tell leaders what the numbers say, even when the forecast is not what anyone hoped to see. Integrity means every model is built on validated results and clear assumptions, and every forecast is one you would stand behind in the boardroom. Trust means the CFO, the executive team, and every company that joins us can count on Finance to show up with the answer and the reasoning behind it. Together we rise.
